Hotel Indigo San Diego Del Mar, an IHG Hotel
We chose Hotel Indigo Del Mar for taking its brand's promise of local storytelling seriously...
Del Mar is the kind of beach town that San Diego visitors reach for after they have already done downtown: a short stretch of coast north of the city, a village of low buildings and eucalyptus trees, a racetrack that fills the hills with noise for a few weeks each summer and leaves them silent the rest of the year. Les Artistes Inn sits on Camino Del Mar, the town's main street, a fifteen minute walk from the sand. It has twelve rooms. Each one is built around a painter, from the palette on the wall to the name on the door, and the effect is closer to a small, opinionated gallery than to a standard inn.
We chose this address because it does one thing and does it with conviction: twelve rooms is not enough to be anonymous, and the owners have used that scale to give each one an identity rather than a number. A courtyard with a fireplace and a barbecue sits at the center, landscaped with stone paths that make the whole property feel more like a private garden than a parking-lot motel. It is pet-friendly, independently run, and close enough to the water and the village that a car becomes optional once you have arrived.
Camino Del Mar runs the length of the village, and from the inn it is a flat, easy walk to Del Mar City Beach, past the cafés and small shops that make up the town center. San Diego proper is a half hour's drive south, which keeps Del Mar a destination rather than a suburb: close enough for a day trip into the city, far enough that the pace at street level stays unhurried. The inn's position on the main street means breakfast, coffee, and dinner are all within reach on foot, without needing to move the car once.

The twelve rooms are not a gimmick stretched thin: each is decorated around its painter rather than simply named for one, with color and art chosen to carry the theme through rather than stop at the door. Several open onto ocean or garden views, and the practical side of a stay is covered without fuss: cable television, a microwave, a seating area with room to spread out. The scale shows in the quiet. With only a dozen rooms on the property, there is none of the corridor traffic of a larger hotel, and the garden outside does more work than a lobby would.
utside the rooms, the inn's real asset is its outdoor space: a landscaped courtyard with stone walkways, a fireplace that gets lit as the coastal evenings turn cool, and a barbecue area that turns the property into something closer to a shared backyard than a hotel corridor. It is the kind of detail that rewards guests who are not simply passing through, the sort who will take a coffee outside in the morning or a glass of wine out there after dinner in the village.
welve rooms means the inn books out quickly around summer weekends and the racing season, so this is not a last-minute stop. Pets are welcome, which is not a given on this stretch of coast, and the walk to the beach and village means a car is useful for reaching San Diego but not for daily life once you have settled in. Expect an independent, owner-scaled property rather than hotel-brand uniformity: the trade-off for the character is a short list of rooms and a need to plan ahead.
