San Diego Mission Bay Resort
What convinced us here is the barefoot chic of it all: a waterfront resort on...
Most San Diego hotels that mention the water mean a view of it. The Dana on Mission Bay means a dock: ten acres of semi tropical grounds on West Mission Bay Drive wrap around a private marina where guests can paddle board, kayak or take out a sailboat without leaving the property. The resort's original 1960s structure, pergola entrance included, gives it a lived in, mid century character that a rebuilt waterfront hotel would have to fake.
Mission Bay has plenty of hotels with a pool and a bay view; few have their own working marina and a water sports program built around it. That is what earns The Dana its place here over newer, glossier competition: a resort identity rooted in something guests can actually do, not just look at. Two heated pools, shuffleboard and ping pong courts, and direct access to the Mission Bay bike path round out a property built for days spent outside rather than in the lobby.
West Mission Bay Drive sits removed from downtown's density, closer to the bay's calmer water sports culture than the Gaslamp's nightlife. SeaWorld is a fifteen minute walk, the broader bay path connects to miles of cycling and running routes, and the ocean beaches and Belmont Park sit under a mile off. It suits families and active travelers more than a downtown convention stay.

Rooms split between two eras: the original Marina Cove building, functional but showing its age, and the 2004 Water's Edge section, which carries exposed ceiling beams, wet bars, bay views and sofa sleepers built for families. The gap between the two is real enough that it is worth asking for Water's Edge at booking rather than leaving it to chance.
The private marina is the detail that separates this resort from its neighbors. Paddle boats, kayaks and sailboats launch directly from the property, and the calm water inside the bay makes it an easy entry point for guests who have never tried any of it. Paired with the bike path at the door, it gives The Dana an outdoor program that a standard hotel pool cannot match.
