The Pearl Hotel
What won us over at The Pearl is the pool, an art moderne, oyster-shaped basin...
The Inn at Sunset Cliffs takes its cue directly from Santorini: whitewashed walls, arched doorways and a cliffside position that puts the Pacific on view from almost every angle. It began life as a modest 1950s motor inn and was rebuilt from the ground up in 2018, keeping the intimate scale, just twenty-four rooms, while raising everything else to a private, considered standard. There is no other San Diego hotel built quite this close to the water on this stretch of coast, and the effect is less a hotel stay than a few days borrowed from the Aegean and set down on the Pacific.
We chose this inn for the rarity of its position: a genuine clifftop perch with a 180-degree ocean view, the Ocean Beach pier visible in the distance, and waves audible from the rooms themselves. Twenty-four rooms is a deliberate ceiling, not a limitation, and it keeps the property feeling like a private address rather than a beachfront chain. The heated pool sits right on the cliff edge and stays open year-round, which is unusual for San Diego's older beachfront stock. It is a hotel that earns its romance from geology rather than styling, and that makes it difficult to copy.
Sunset Cliffs Natural Park runs along the same bluff, a short walk south past tide pools and surf breaks that draw a steady local crowd at golden hour. Ocean Beach's pier, restaurants and Wednesday farmers market sit a few minutes away by car, and SeaWorld is close enough for a quick half-day trip. The position trades the density of Pacific Beach or downtown for something quieter: no boardwalk crowds, no nightlife at the door, just cliff, water and the sound of the surf below the rooms. It suits travellers who came for the view rather than the scene, and who do not mind driving a few minutes for dinner.

The room range runs wide for a twenty-four-room property, from compact poolside queens to suites with kitchenettes and a Presidential Suite built for special occasions, so the inn works equally for a weekend escape or a milestone celebration. Every category leans into the same whitewashed, uncluttered aesthetic rather than differentiating through decor alone, letting the ocean views do the work. Rooms facing the water book out first, particularly around sunset, and are worth requesting specifically rather than leaving to chance. Guests travelling with a group sometimes take several rooms together, since the property's small size keeps it feeling private even when a few parties are staying at once.
The inn doubles as a small wedding and event venue, which means certain weekends can shift the atmosphere toward a private celebration rather than a quiet retreat, worth checking before booking a low-key stay. It welcomes both couples and families, with a mini-golf course adding a lighter touch to what is otherwise a fairly romantic property. Free parking is a genuine advantage in a part of San Diego where beachfront parking is often scarce and metered, and the clifftop setting means a car is useful for reaching Ocean Beach's restaurants or the wider city, since nothing but the coastal path is within immediate walking distance.
